The Nyadire Connection, a Pittsburgh District outreach group that supports the United Methodist Mission in Zimbabwe, is providing a way for students in a suburban Pittsburgh school district to make a difference in the lives of orphaned children in Africa.

All eight schools in the 5,000-student Bethel Park School District are involved in some way. In the elementary and middle schools, students in each homeroom are raising $50 to sponsor an orphan at one of 28 public schools in the villages surrounding the Nyadire Mission.

They’re also filling backpacks with school supplies for the child. These orphans either live in child-led households or are looked after by extended family, said Sara Dickey, outreach director at Christ UMC who helped establish The Nyadire Connection. The $50 covers tuition for an entire year and the cost of a school uniform.
